Electronic Resources
At the Tinley Park Public Library we have a variety of electronic
resources to help you find information.
Ancestry
Library Edition
has more than one
and a half billion names in over 4,000 databases. It
includes records from the United States Census; military records; court,
land and probate records; vital and church records; directories; passenger
lists; and more. Note: Ancestry Library Edition can only be accessed in the
library.
FirstSearch
is a group of 14 databases which helps you locate periodical articles, books, and
conference proceedings. Seven of the databases have full-text articles available:
ABI Inform, PeriodicalAbstracts, ArticleFirst, ECO, ERIC, MEDLINE and
WilsonSelectPlus. Illinois residents may access FirstSearch from home via the World
Wide Web. Call the library at (708) 532-0160 ext. 1 for the authorization and
password.
Grolier
Online offers online access to the Encyclopedia Americana,
New Book of Knowledge, American Heritage Dictionary, and
Roget's II: The New Thesaurus. In addition, Grolier has created a
multimedia encyclopedia rich with photographs, timelines, and maps.
When accessing Grolier Online from home, you will be asked to type in the barcode
from your library card to confirm you are a TPPL patron.
Heritage Quest Online
is a genealogy database that
enables you to search over 25,000 local history books, the U.S. Federal
Census from 1790-1930, PERSI, and the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty
Land Warrant Application Files. When accessing HeritageQuest from home, you will be asked to type in the barcode
from your library card to confirm you are a TPPL patron.
Infotrac &
Contemporary Authors is a group of 4 databases which helps you locate
periodical articles. Contemporary Authors which enables you to search for
biographical information on authors. All of the databases have full-text articles
available. These databases are available to Tinley Park Public Library patrons from
home. When accessing Infotrac from home, you will be asked to type in the barcode
from your library card to confirm you are a TPPL patron.
LearningExpressLibrary
provides completely interactive online practice tests and tutorial courses designed to
help you succeed on academic or licensing tests . You'll get immediate scoring,
complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of your results. Some of the
practice tests included are for the ACT, SAT, ASVAB, GED, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, AP courses,
PRAXIS, and civil service exams. Your username is your Tinley Park Library Card barcode
and you choose your own password.
Mitchell
OnDemand contains automobile repair information, including wiring
diagrams, scheduled services, technical service bulletins, and diagnostic
codes for foreign and domestic cars and trucks.
Note: Mitchell OnDemand can
only be accessed in the library.
Newsbank
is a newspaper database which enables you to search for new and archived articles
from a variety of U.S. newspapers and for obituaries from America's Obituaries and Death
Notices from home. When searching Newsbank from home, you will be asked to type in
the barcode from your library card to confirm that you are a TPPL patron.
In addition to the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times you are
able to search over 400 other newspapers from home. When you use Newsbank in the library
you are able to search for articles in over 550 newspapers. Through Newsbank you can also
search America's Obituaries and Death Notices and the Chicago Tribune Historical
Archive.
NoveList
is a fiction database that provides subject heading access, reviews,
annotations, and much more for over 120,000 fiction titles. It also includes
other content of interest to fiction readers, such as Author Read-alikes,
Book Discussion Guides, BookTalks, and Feature Articles. For school media
specialists and teachers there are Standards-Based Thematic Units and
Picture Book Extenders, as well as specific teaching guides for using
fiction in the classroom. Tinley Park and Orland Hills residents may access
NoveList from home. Call the library at (708) 532-0160 ext. 1 for the
user id and password.
Reference USA
is a residential and business telephone
directory for the United States available at the library. When
searching Reference USA from home, you will be asked to type in
the barcode from your library card to confirm that you are a TPPL patron.
SWAN
is our online public access catalog. You may use SWAN
to locate items in our collection or the collections of other Suburban
Library System libraries. If you do not have Internet access at home, but
have a modem you may dial into the SWAN database.
Tinley
Park Code of Ordinances
provides online
access to the Code of Ordinances for Tinley Park. A print copy is
also available at the library. The print edition is for in-library use only, and may be
obtained by inquiring at the Adult Services Desk.
World Book Online
contains the World Book Encyclopedia, Research
Libraries and World Book Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos (a
Spanish encyclopedia). The Research Libraries contains over
5,500 complete books and 260,000 documents.. Many of these documents
are primary sources (e.g. eyewitness accounts, speeches, supreme court
rulings, and treaties). When accessing World Book Online from home, you will be asked to type in the barcode
from your library card to confirm you are a TPPL patron.
