Position Description: Bookmobile Clerk
Status: Part-time Non-exempt
Grade: 16

DEFINITION: A part-time position involving direct service to patrons of all ages on the Library Bookmobile. The Bookmobile Clerk operates the bookmobile in a variety of weather, road and traffic conditions. Supervised by the Outreach Services Manager.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides consistent, gracious, and friendly service to Library patrons and fellow staff
  • Understands and complies with the Library’s policies and procedures while safeguarding confidentiality and restricted information
  • Exhibits a willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty to meet patrons’ requests and to promote a positive image of the Library throughout the community
  • Regularly scheduled to drive the bookmobile to designated stops throughout the communities of Tinley Park and Orland Hills
  • Performs check-in and check-out of library materials; collects fines and fees
  • Registers borrowers and issues library cards
  • Provides reader’s advisory assistance to patrons of all ages with an emphasis on adult popular materials
  • Answers basic reference questions
  • Understands the basic operation of the bookmobile and assists with routine maintenance
  • Operates the bookmobile in a variety of weather, road, and traffic conditions
  • Performs vehicle safety check; reports vehicle problems to Department Manager
  • Selects materials for homebound patrons and retirement centers
  • Keeps the bookmobile shelves stocked with a high interest collection
  • Performs basic troubleshooting of computers and printers
  • Understands when to refer unresolved problems regarding procedures or policies to the Department Manager
  • Represents the library at community events
  • Attends library meetings and workshops as approved by Department Manager
  • Promotes safety among co-workers and clear communication on all risk and safety issues
  • Obeys and adheres to all safety rules and established work practices
  • Promptly reports to supervisor all observed unsafe actions, practices, or conditions
  • Performs other duties as assigned

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with people of all ages in a friendly, approachable, and tactful manner
  • Possess a strong command of the English language and demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to conduct a basic reference interview
  • Awareness of popular culture and trends
  • Willingness to learn children’s literature
  • Ability to file alphabetically and numerically
  • Ability to learn the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to utilize basic math skills
  • Knowledge of and ability to use PCs and a variety of hardware/software applications
  • Ability to safely operate the bookmobile
  • Ability to set priorities, make independent decisions, and exercise discretion with patrons and staff
  • Ability to remain calm under difficult circumstances
  • Ability to use a variety of office equipment
  • Ability to bend, stoop, lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to push a fully loaded book cart

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of college
  • Two years’ experience working with the public
  • Valid driver’s license and excellent driving record
  • Driving test required
  • Access to transportation
  • Evening and weekend hours required
