Thanks to the generosity of library patrons, our collection of books & other materials is constantly improving with respect to currency and the ever-broadening scope of topics. We are grateful for this ongoing support. Even when books are not directly added to the collection, they may still benefit the library when sold through the Friends Book Store.
In accepting a gift of materials, the library reserves the privilege of deciding whether items donated should be added to the collection. Out of the many books and other materials which citizens so generously give, a considerable proportion can be used. Some cannot, because any library material, though of value in itself, may be: (1) a duplicate of an item which the library already owns; (2) outdated--interesting, but not of sufficient present reference or circulating value to the library; and/or (3) in poor condition--which would not justify the expense of processing it, i.e. cataloging and preparing it for circulation.
The material will be judged by the same standards of selection as those applied to the purchase of new materials. The Tinley Park Public Library accepts gift books with the understanding that books which are useful to the library collection will be retained and other books disposed of in whatever manner the library deems best. The library necessarily reserves the right to interfile gifts with other collections on the same subject, so that all collections are organized and classified according to library standards for the best public service. To donate a gift book, please fill out the Gift Agreement Form and send it to the Business Office at the library.
We are not able to use the following:
- Magazines and Newspapers
- Nonfiction and textbooks more than five years old
- VHS tapes
- Damaged or moldy books
***Non-library collection materials (antiques, art work, furniture, historical objects) are accepted only with permission of the Library Administrator. For details, please read the Gifts to the Library Policy.
HONORING A LOVED ONE
The library accepts donations to purchase materials for the collection in honor of, or as a memorial to, a loved one. Library staff choose books that reflect the interests of the honored person. A bookplate with that person's name is added to the book. An acknowledgement of the gift is sent to the donor and published in our quarterly newsletter. For more information, or to make a donation, please complete the Gift Book Form and contact Administration at 708-532-0160, x8.
