The Rich and Romantic History of Valentines
About this event
Join historian Ellie Carlson as she celebrates her favorite holiday's history. The event concludes with a brief show & tell valentine making workshop & exhibit shared by Ellie. Signup begins on January 15.
Part Exhibit, Park Historical Talk, Part Workshop, join Ellie as she celebrates her very favorite holiday! Who was St. Valentine really? Who sent the oldest valentine that is still in existence and what did it say? How did sending paper valentines to loved ones catch on in so many places? These and other questions will be answered in this fun and informative presentation.
Ellie has been making her own hand-made valentines since she was four years old. Every year she creates paper and lace treasures for her friends and family and she celebrates anything and everything heart-shaped all year long. Ellie will share her collection of vintage valentines and her research into the history of this holiday with participants.
As a special treat, Ellie is happy to bring valentine making supplies to the venue so that everyone in attendance can create their own special hand-made valentine to take home. For virtual events, Ellie will pack kits and deliver them to a central location so that participants can pick up a packet of doilies, scrap, ribbons, hearts and special papers for their own at-home valentine making. Participants who collect valentines and wish to share their collection with the group will be given time at the end to showcase their treasures. The Show & Tell and valentine-making workshop will take place after the talk.
