Legal & Financial Issues for Caregivers: Hybrid/Virtual

About this event

Caregivers will learn about legal and financial issues affecting them and care recipients: advanced directives, maximizing employee benefits for the caregiver, budgeting, and Medicare & Medicaid benefits and limitations. Presented by Catherine Stowers, Program Manager at Pathlights. Since 1975, Pathlights (formerly PLOWS Council on Aging) has been helping guide adults 60 years of age and over, adults with disabilities, their caregivers, families, and friends along their best path to aging – providing resources, advocacy, programs and services needed to live with independence and dignity in the community. Serving the communities that comprise Palos, Lemont, Orland, and Worth Townships, Pathlights helps more than 16,000 people each year.

This is part two of our Caregivers series. Remember to signup for each date in the series.

Speaker Bio: Catherine Stowers has worked as a Caregiver Specialist and the Caregiver Program Manager at Pathlights (formerly PLOWS Council on Aging) since January of 2018. For three years prior to that, she supported a variety of programs from home-delivered meals, complex case management, and Adult Protective Services in her work at Pathlights. Catherine has led many caregiver support groups and is a trained volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association in facilitating an early-onset support group for individuals diagnosed with early-onset dementia and their caregivers. She is also trained to lead The Savvy Caregiver and Stress-Busting for Family Caregivers programs, that are geared towards increasing caregiver skills, knowledge, confidence, and self-care. Pathlights has hosted a Memory Café since 2019; a space where caregivers and their loved one with memory loss can socialize with others and take part in activities such as art therapy, music therapy, and mindfulness practices. In addition to the many years of professional experience, dementia has also impacted Catherine personally as both of her maternal grandparents were diagnosed with the disease.
